Water massage for the spine: are there any contraindications?

Water massage for the spine: are there any contraindications?

Hydromassage gained popularity after German doctors noticed that patients regain strength faster in an aquatic environment, because... the body relaxes, and directed jets supplied under pressure act on the spine, providing a therapeutic effect.

Another innovation is the addition of a large number of bubbles. The hydromassage unit creates microbubbles due to nozzles located in the walls of the structure. A mechanical liquid atomizer directs the movement and controls the frequency and configuration of the flow. Currently, many reservoirs are equipped with pulsating models.

The effect of aquatic procedures on the body

In an aquatic environment, a person finds himself in a state of weightlessness; room temperature promotes muscle relaxation, eliminating spasms and pain.

Hydromassage allows you to:

  • lose extra pounds - a person loses weight by eliminating fat deposits;
  • increased muscle tone and improved skin contributes to improved well-being;
  • water procedures will relieve the load on the spine and increase joint mobility.

It helps with problems of the musculoskeletal system, it treats pathologies of the central nervous system and diseases of internal organs, metabolic disorders.

help the spine

hydromassage is possible if:

  • diseases of the musculoskeletal system were detected;
  • the person sleeps restlessly;
  • the patient feels nervous tension or is very tired;
  • there was a disruption in the activity of the nervous system.

The procedure has a positive effect on the functioning of the heart muscle and blood vessels. After hydrotherapy, endorphins enter the bloodstream, relieving pain.

Those people who have:

  • blood clots were found in blood vessels;
  • period of exacerbation of osteochondrosis of the back;
  • diagnosed with ARVI;
  • there are skin and cancer problems;
  • high blood pressure;
  • bleeding.

The water-air mixture is a therapeutic way to get rid of health problems. The healing session is carried out in artificial reservoirs. Patients of medical institutions are recommended to attend 15-minute sessions. The course of treatment, depending on how you feel, ranges from 10 to 25 procedures. Bathing bowls with a special design are purchased at plumbing stores and installed at home.

Types of hydromassage devices

Hydrotherapy is a rehabilitation method for improving the patient’s health. Consists of bubble, vibration and water action. A positive result is achieved thanks to the vibrations of the massage jet. Shower massage affects relaxed muscles with air and water flow. Bubbles move through the holes in the system. The slots are responsible for the intensity of pressure.

During a physiotherapeutic procedure, water jets affect the human body, creating a massage effect. Its peculiarity is that blood circulation and lymph flow are accelerated, whereby metabolic products are quickly removed from the tissues. During massage, the water jet is served in different ways - cool or heated.

  • A contrast shower will relax you, relieve spasms, and calm you down. This is the so-called Charcot shower. After using it, excess weight will go away and swelling will subside.
  • In a circular one, thin jets hit the structure from top to bottom onto a person in a lying position.
  • In ascending, water comes from below.
  • In non-contact hydromassage, the patient is placed on a surface
    covered with an elastic membrane. A container with water and hydraulic nozzles is placed under it.
  • Ultrasonic is the most modern type of water procedure. It is carried out in a special container with special valves - ultrasound sources.
  • The underwater type is a bathtub with a flexible pipe, which regulates the pressure, thickness, and degree of impact of the water jet on problem areas.

Important! Hydromassage cannot cure the disease. Its task is to reduce pressure on the affected intervertebral cartilage pads and stop their breakdown.

Rules of conduct during the session

A spa treatment is not only useful, but also leaves a pleasant feeling if you follow simple recommendations.

  • After a heavy feast or drinking alcoholic beverages, it is not recommended to go for a hydromassage.
  • You should not stay under the jets for a long time. The best option is half an hour.
  • It is forbidden to plunge headlong, as the powerful water flow will damage your hearing and vision.
  • After the session, excessive activity is not recommended - only peace and relaxation.

During aquamassage, the patient is immersed in a bowl of water, taking a comfortable position to be directly under the pressure of the water mass. To enhance the therapeutic effect, sea crystals are sprinkled or natural aromatic substances are added. The water should be heated to a temperature not reaching forty degrees. Depending on the disease, the water pressure is selected. The water jet is directed at the skin not directly, but obliquely. Powerful pressure is turned on when massaging the legs or arms; weaker pressure is suitable for the torso.

Non-drug method of treating the spine

A hot tub will help improve the well-being of a person with spinal problems. After bathing, pain in the spinal column and limbs will disappear. A water-air mixture is prescribed for lower back diseases. To treat the back, alternate different water procedures. Massage the affected bone areas with water. Water-air flows relieve pressure from damaged areas and improve the motor functions of joints.

Attention!
Only a physician, after a complete diagnosis, prescribes a water procedure based on the patient’s individual testimony. Author: K.M.N., Academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences M.A. Bobyr

  • In spa treatment, there are a huge number of different procedures that combine therapeutic and cosmetic effects. This is an underwater shower massage, also called hydromassage or aquamassage. The main feature of this procedure is the combination of hydrostatic and hydrodynamic effects of water.

    At Sanatorium Kirova LLC, underwater shower massage is prescribed only by a doctor, based on the patient’s individual indications; procedures are carried out only by experienced specialists with medical education under the supervision of the attending physician.

    The entire procedure is carried out in a common bath filled with warm water (36-38 degrees) with an average capacity of 500-600 liters. 3-5 minutes after the patient plunges into the bath and adapts to it, the massage can gradually begin. Usually sea salt is added to the water, but this component is optional. Essential oils and herbal decoctions can also be added.

    The nurse in the balneology department begins to massage the body with a water jet, which is supplied from a special hose under pressure. Various attachments allow you to change the intensity and focus of the impact on a specific area of the body. The water jet used for massage can be supplied at different temperatures (colder, hotter or similar to the temperature of the water in the bath), which allows you to achieve the maximum effect from the procedure. The jet is directed under strong pressure (from 3 to 4 atmospheres) onto the patient’s legs and arms. More sensitive areas (back, abdomen, chest, groin) are massaged in a more gentle manner, from a distance of 15-20 cm. The duration of the entire procedure is gradually increased over time, from 15 to 45 minutes.

    Massage can be general and local, depending on the physical condition of the patient.

    Impact on the body during underwater shower massage:

    • The effect of a medicinal bath (when adding various decoctions of herbs or drugs to it, it can solve many dermatological problems);
    • the effect of water massage.

    Water has a beneficial effect on completely relaxing the body and muscles. That is why this procedure is recommended for pathologies of blood and lymph circulation and metabolism.

    Indications for underwater shower massage are:

    • state of depression, asthenia, sleep problems, chronic fatigue syndrome, constant stress and nervous stress;
    • diseases of the cardiovascular system, as well as arterial hypertension;
    • disturbances in the functioning of the central and peripheral nervous system;
    • Bechterew's disease (inflammation of the intervertebral joints);
    • cerebral palsy;
    • obesity of any degree, cellulite, gout and other metabolic disorders;
    • muscle paresis that results from polio;
    • diseases of the gastrointestinal tract;
    • decreased immunity;
    • diseases of the musculoskeletal system, in particular, arthralgia, osteochondrosis, arthritis and arthrosis, sciatica, myalgia, various types of motor disorders and other similar pathologies;
    • increased physical stress, as well as sports overload;
    • lymphatic and venous insufficiency, varicose veins, trophic ulcers;
    • sexual disorders.

    Underwater shower massage (indications and contraindications must be taken into account) cannot be performed during exacerbation of any chronic disease, attacks of fever, infectious diseases, or damage to the skin. These contraindications are relative and after eliminating them, the underwater massage procedure can be safely continued.

    The procedure is contraindicated:

    • people with circulatory disorders of the cerebral cortex, hypertension above the 2nd degree;
    • exacerbations of inflammatory processes;
    • thrombophlebitis, pronounced varicose veins;
    • urolithiasis.

    After an underwater shower massage, the patient does not feel any pain or fatigue. With the help of such an effect, you can relax your muscles, put your figure in order, and not just lose a few kilograms, but also correct your contours. Also, with its help, you can remove the hated “orange peel” in a few procedures, since sea salt is used, which directly affects the subcutaneous adipose tissue. Warm water activates the movement of blood through the vessels, which speeds up the process of removing toxins from the body.

    Despite the fact that underwater shower massage has indications and contraindications, the procedure is considered practically safe. After it, slight redness of the skin may remain, but they are barely noticeable and go away on their own within a short period of time.

    The duration of the full course of treatment is 10-12 procedures. The duration of one session can vary from 15 to 45 minutes or more, depending on the indications and purpose of the massage.

    It is recommended to repeat the course every six months.

    Types of hydromassage for weight loss

    Today, spa salons and health centers offer three types of hydromassage:

    • rising shower;
    • Charcot's shower;
    • underwater shower massage

    Each of these procedures is effective in its own way, but differs from each other in the strength of its impact and methods of implementation.

    A rising shower is considered the most acceptable option for those who have already dealt with water procedures. It applies moderate pressure on the body without causing pain, and by regulating the temperature of the water in conjunction with the massage movements of the jets, it creates optimal conditions for achieving good results.

    Charcot's shower is usually used after a course of ascending shower, and even then only on the recommendation of a doctor. Since the force of influence of this procedure is quite large, we are talking about a powerful jet that is directed at the patient and causes significant pain.

    By the way: Which massage is the most effective for weight loss?

    The most favorable, gentle and painless is, as reviews say, an underwater shower massage for weight loss . This procedure will not harm even those who have hypersensitive skin.

    Its essence lies in the fact that the patient is placed in a bath with mineral water, and the massage therapist treats the body using a hose into which water flows under moderate pressure. Due to the fact that all manipulations take place under water, the jet affects the body very gently and painlessly. Due to the drainage effect that this procedure has on the skin, you can lose several centimeters in volume over the course of one clothing size.

    We suggest watching a video of an underwater massage to get an idea of how such a session goes.

    Underwater massage technique

    Underwater massage is carried out in clinics, sanatoriums, boarding houses, beauty salons or at home if there is a jacuzzi. Jets of water mixed with air bubbles affect the body and relieve it from pain, tension, fatigue, and congestion. Warm water is better absorbed by tissues and has a more pronounced relaxing effect.

    For a hydro shower or underwater massage, you need a bath with a volume of at least 400 liters with a water temperature of at least 35°C and no more than 45°C. The choice of temperature regime is explained by the following points:

    • high temperature increases blood pressure, muscle tone and dilates blood vessels;
    • low temperature reduces blood pressure and strengthens the immune system;
    • warm water has a beneficial effect on the functioning of the endocrine system;
    • a contrast bath reduces pain and irritability, improves sleep and concentration.

    The bath is filled with water, ethers, decoctions of medicinal herbs or sea salt are added. The procedure time depends on the composition of the water, indications and treatment course and is 5-20 minutes. The session begins with a short rest, after which water is supplied under pressure of 1-4 atmospheres. In a clinical setting, a specialist controls the water jet, changing not only the pressure force, but also the angle of inclination and the distance from the nozzles to the body.

    Basic Techniques

    During the treatment, techniques similar to classical massage are used. For stroking, place the underwater shower head at a distance of up to 15 cm from the body and press the stream of water with your free hand. Water is supplied at an angle of 30° and directed along massage lines. To create an additional effect, air suction is used. Kneading is carried out in a circular motion, and the shower head is placed at a distance of 3-5 cm from the skin. Water is supplied at a right angle. To perform the procedure, the doctor grabs the skin with one hand and easily pulls it back. With his other hand he directs a stream of water. Vibrations or oscillatory movements go from the peripheral zones to the center. When performing this technique, it is forbidden to influence the heart area, mammary glands and genitals.

    When working with the abdomen, all movements are performed only clockwise, since peristaltic movement of the intestines occurs in this direction.

    After the session, the client is given 5-10 minutes to relax in the bath. After the massage, redness of the skin is possible, which is a normal reaction and is explained by the activation of blood circulation.

    To change the force of impact and work on different parts of the body, different attachments are used. The smaller size is used to work on the neck, feet, arms, and shoulders. Wide attachments allow you to work your legs, back or stomach.

    The average course of water procedures includes from 10 to 20 sessions, which are carried out every day or every other day. Then they take a break of 6-7 months and, if necessary, repeat the course. Relaxing hydromassage baths can be taken every day if you feel well.
