Guarana extract - composition and effects
The climbing vine Guarana belongs to the Sapindaceae family and grows mainly in Brazil and Paraguay, but is also found in certain regions of South and Latin America. Guarana has a cult significance for a number of South American peoples, in particular for the indigenous Guarani and Tupi tribes. According to legend, the great good god took the left eye of a child and from it created guarana, the extract of which allowed the tribes to survive in difficult times.
Europeans became acquainted with guarana only in the 16th century, and the production of the extract reached industrial scale in the second half of the 19th century. Today it is one of the most sought-after tonic supplements, having a number of complex effects, including general stimulation of the body, acceleration of metabolism and aphrodisiac effects.
In folk practice in Latin America, guarana extract is used to relieve fever, headaches and spasms; it is used as a general tonic and as an inhibitor of bacterial infections. Despite the fact that the Indians had been using guarana extract as a tonic for centuries, the colonists almost immediately began using this substance to combat hangovers (and I must say, very effectively).
Today, guarana is found in many tonic drinks, including pre-workout supplements. It is widely used in sports nutrition, in particular as a weight loss supplement. The effects of guarana are due to a number of ingredients included in its composition.

Green tea extract for weight loss: all about the real benefits of the supplement
What is guarana
This plant has been used by the indigenous people of Brazil, Colombia and Peru for many centuries, but has only recently gained popularity among European consumers. The name of the plant literally means “a fruit that looks like a human eye.” Indeed, the healing product looks unusual: the black core, similar to a huge pupil, is shrouded in white pulp, and the eyelids of the “eye” are formed by a bright red dense peel.
From a botanical point of view, guarana was described back in the 15-16th centuries, but mass consumption began only in 1906 with the preparation of soda with an extract of these miraculous fruits. The inventor of the invigorating soft drink was a resident of the capital of Brazil named Baretto. Then they began to obtain powder from the plant for use in various ways: the seed was extracted from the fruit, it was ground with water to a liquid pulp, then the pulp was dried in the sun, and guarana powder was obtained.
Daily norm and dosage
The average dosage of guarana is 1-1.5 teaspoons of powder. You can add it to juice, hot chocolate or fruit salad. It is acceptable to consume guarana 1-2 times a day, but it is not recommended to do this less than 7-8 hours before bedtime, as the supplement may cause problems with falling asleep.
When first used, it is better to reduce the dosage to 200-300 milligrams and monitor the body’s reaction to the supplement.
Caution and side effects
Despite all the benefits that consuming guarana can bring, there are a number of serious contraindications to its use:
- Pregnancy;
- Lactation;
- Susceptibility to pronounced food allergic reactions;
- Elderly age;
- Diseases of the cardiovascular system.
Exceeding the daily norm can cause harm to the body and manifest itself in rapid heartbeat, increased sweating, irritability, chest pain, and tremors in the limbs. In order to avoid possible negative consequences, you should follow the recommended dosage and carefully listen to the reactions and condition of your body.
