DIY energy bars
Having a stock of non-perishable food is one thing, but being able to prepare something tasty and healthy from this stock is completely different. This is much more difficult than working with farm-grown vegetables, beans or rice. When your assortment includes only basic products and canned goods, you have to be as creative as possible. But it’s even more difficult to make these dishes in such a way that they can also be stored for a long time. And it is one of these dishes that we will talk about today.
More and more people are becoming convinced that the refrigerator is not the best way to store food in case of BP. Packing them in vacuum plastic bags is much better, but also much more expensive. As well as the use of dehydrators, among which we still need to find something truly effective.
However, there is an alternative drying method - using an oven. If it operates at low temperatures, the products in it will dry out with a bang, which will significantly extend their shelf life. At the same time, it is also worth ensuring good air flow, for example, by placing a fan next to the slightly open oven door. And it is with its help that you can prepare homemade energy bars.
Ingredients
For this dish, in addition to water, you will need 6 simple ingredients, which also dehydrate well and are stored in this form for quite a long time. And you will need the following:
- 2 cups classic oatmeal;
- half a glass of flax seeds;
- 2 glasses of milk powder;
- a glass of sugar;
- 1 package of lemon jelly;
- 3 tablespoons of water;
- 3 tablespoons of honey.
Recipe
To begin, preheat the oven to 90 degrees Celsius. In a separate large bowl, combine oats, seeds, milk powder and sugar. Mix by hand until smooth.
In another saucepan, combine jelly, water and honey. There is no need to read the instructions on the package of jelly, since you will be preparing another dish - you simply need this component as a flavoring additive.
Bring the liquid mixture to a boil over low-medium, remembering to stir constantly. As soon as it boils, wait a minute and remove from heat.
Then, pour the mixture into a saucepan with oatmeal and other ingredients. Wait for it to cool a little, then mix everything by hand again. The result should not be too dry, and it is easier to determine this by touch.
If it seems to you that it is too dry, add 1 tablespoon of water at a time - this makes it easier to regulate the degree of hydration. It should not be too liquid either, as this will reduce the shelf life of the finished product.
As soon as the mixture begins to hold the shape of a sausage after squeezing in your hand, you can continue to work with it.
Line a baking dish with foil or parchment paper (this is better), place the mixture on it and press it firmly to the surface using something flat. You can, for example, use the bottom of a measuring cup or even a rolling pin.
Using a sharp knife, divide the resulting plane into several approximately equal blocks. Be careful to cut completely without damaging the parchment or foil.
Now you can send the form to the already preheated oven for one and a half or two hours, or until the cubes become crispy.
After that, take it out and let it cool. In this form, “homemade” energy bars will last about a year.
Storage
There was not much water in the dough initially, and during drying at low temperatures, its amount will decrease even more. This is to your advantage, since the less moisture there is, the lower the chance of microorganisms developing that cause spoilage and rotting.
It is best to store the finished bars in an airtight container located in a cool and dry place. But you can also use mylar bags, each of which additionally holds about 1 cubic meter of oxygen absorber. centimeter.
If you have the appropriate equipment, you can store the whole thing in vacuum bags.
As for the recipe itself, it can be actively modified. Use, for example, not lemon jelly, but some other flavor. Or add nuts, poppy seeds, sunflower seeds or even dried fruit. Only those that are already quite dry.
Total
It is important not only to be able to properly store supplies, but also to prepare something tasty and varied from them. Still, you can live for several years on just a set of canned goods, but there is little pleasure in this. And by learning to use creativity in the cooking process, you can prepare dishes that are not only nutritious, but also tasty, and therefore improve your mood. The main thing is to make sure that you know how to properly store them in the future.
